American Association of Public Health Physicians (AAPHP) publicly endorsed electronic cigarettes.
The statement, written by AAPHP task force Chair Joel L. Nitzkin, M.D. pointed out that tobacco users are more likely to accept e cigarettes than prescription medication when trying to quit. Nitzkin also wrote that tobacco smokers can gain almost all the health benefits of quitting smoking if they switch to an electronic cigarette.

Anyone who has ever tried to quit smoking knows how difficult that can be to achieve. Fortunately there are a number of options available today to help smokers either kick the habit or significantly cut down on tobacco use.
Among those options are the e cigarettes , or electronic cigarettes, which research shows is an effective aid in making the switch to a healthier lifestyle. Additional options include nicotine gum, the patch, the lozenge, the nasal spray and the inhaler. Medicines such as bupropion, known by Zyban® or Wellbutrin®, and varenicline, or Chantix®, are also sometimes prescribed to help smokers quit.
Survey finds an electronic cigarette helps smokers quit or cut down on tobacco
On online survey led by Michael B. Siegel, M.D. examined the effectiveness of e cigarette in helping people quit smoking. Based on the responses of 222 people who smoked for six years or more, the results of the survey suggested that electronic cigarettes can help decrease nicotine dependence and in some cases, e cigarettes can help smokers completely kick the habit.
More than two thirds of people who responded to the survey said they reduced the number of tobacco cigarettes they smoked per day after trying e cigarettes . In addition, nearly half of the people in the survey quit smoking for a period of time after trying e cigarettes . The researchers stated that the results of the survey were important because smokers who simply reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke are more likely to quit smoking completely than those who don’t first cut down.
The survey also pointed to evidence that e cigarettes work in helping people completely stop tobacco use. Six months after trying e cigarettes , 31 percent of the people were still not smoking tobacco. Nearly 57 percent of them were smoking e cigarettes .
